You pirating thieves! You take my 18-year old book and still have the gall to want to read it! And worse, to share it! I will haunt your dreams! See you in court! Attack your neighbor's dog!

Just a joke! Yes, this really is Steve Worley.. Johan sent me email about the book so I came here myself.

It's great there's still a community for Imagine.
I grant permission for Johan to host that Understanding Imagine scan here, and for anyone to download it, but not reprint or resell it.

There's an interesting story behind the book. At the time (1991) I had a full time job but I loved Imagine and started the Imagine mailing list (in the early early internet days, way before the web). When Imagine 2.0 was in beta, the Impulse guys asked me to write the manual and a companion tutorial guide. They were in a huge rush and needed it done in 2 weeks and would pay $1500. I took 2 weeks of vacation from my job and worked full time to make the reference manual first. I Fed-exed it to them (remember, 1991!), and then Mike Halvorson said "oh, we delayed Imagine by another two weeks, and we found someone else to write the manual for less money."

So, I was stuck with owning a manual for someone else's software! So I put up a little ad in AVID magazine and sold 2 copies... but after a while, word of mouth sold it and there were over 10,000 copies sold over the next two years. All self-published. I made a lot more money than the $1500 I was promised! (And it was also satisfying looking at the official Imagine 2.0 manual which frankly couldn't compare.)

For that matter, I'll ask if anyone has copies of the actual 1992,1993 Essence and 1994 Forge software to upload. I have copies of the Amiga version on an old amiga-formatted hard drive that hasn't been turned on in 12 years, but likely someone else has them too.
There's several different products:

Essence I (latest version was 3.0)
Essence II (latest version was 3.0)
Forge 1.0

The Essence packages had about 30 procedural textures each.

There's also Essence for the PC (1995?), which I do NOT have a copy of anymore myself.

Forge was especially used a lot in Hollywood for making image texture maps that could be used in 3D studio (pre-Max) and LightWave. Forge basically acted like a host for Imagine procedural textures and could animate them and spit out hires antialiased image tiles or animations. It was Amiga-only.

Hello Mr. Worley! It's cool as hell to see your virtual self around here. Nice introduction.

I had meant to drop by your office when I lived up in Oakland just for the chance to shake your hand, but, I never got the chance, and now I live down in LA. At least I got to see where Jay Miner invented the Amiga when I was up there.

I have to thank you so much for your book. I got a lot of use out it. It was often sitting next to my Amiga, just for me to read through when I had Imagine running. I don't use my Amiga for Imagine much anymore. These guys here have lured me into using the Windows version, which renders at a much quicker speed. DeluxePaint still kicks ass though!

I have the Amiga and PC versions of Essence.
Am uploading the PC Essence CD contents now.

My Amiga has been sitting in a dusty corner for the last 10 years, so I might not be able to et the disks copied, but I do have the manuals, will give them a scan if possible
