modelled of course from a geosphere. I forgot to make sharp edges though (oops)

I honestly hate sports of just about all kinds, so have no idea what it should look like other than pics online, so I have no idea if it looks right or not, but there was a reason for not making sharp edges... I didn't quite model it with all the right edges and it looked crap with the sharp edges on. Looked better this way, even if it doesn't look quite right.

Hmm, I have to look into that, not sure how you did that if it didn't involve a lot of point editing...

I will have to check the I-Files to see if Imagine has an extrude I don't know of :D

yes, it did involve a lot of point editing, face selection, much use of the 'pick more' function, hiding and unhiding, fracturing, and you can extrude a selection of faces. I just miscalculated so edges weren't in the middle of the 'seam'

Ah, then I wasn't so far off, would have loved to see a spherical "extrude" or select faces and extrude in various manners like along normal, along radius, from center, towards a point etc etc with scaling as part of it :P
...
ah well... I guess you already have your robot the Dalek

** Here's my final render. **
Made the ball with a lot of point editing etc from a geosphere, made my own particle grass, added HDR specular and IBL light array and finally a little DOF
I know nothing about sports, so looked up the markings on the field, added the corner markings. No clue if they are to scale or not (nor do I really care) but it was a quick attempt at a challenge that had been around for a while

Enjoy

PS. actually I haven't thought of the metals challenge yet. I like to let people have a go before I do something. I wouldn't use my Dalek though, I would probably do something more current... like a beaten up scratched to hell Iron Man helmet/mask, but, who knows :)
