lol...The same old con game.. Take money for advance orders, wait 5 years for a substandard product if it arrives at all.

Seriously i dont know why anyone would think it could succeed. Any business must make money and without a reasonable user base its doomed to failure..Thats why IFW3.0 never arrived..not enough money to continue development..

Hmmm,

I have been aware of amiga.com and their products for a while, they havent looked very serious...

The "pre press-release" really doesnt say anything of relevance, so I will choose to wait until their "proper" release before I judge this...

$500 for a consumer machine is a good price IF it can contend with any of the "normal" platforms today, I dont see the "killer-app" in the mix yet.

Its all well and fine to quote from years back, but until they show me something current that really can compete, its of no real interest.

It does NOT say that you put your money in and wait for hardware, so I dont know where you got that from?

Although I DO wonder who the Amiga retailers are supposed to be, if its only the shortlist on their site it will sure be difficult for anyone not local to those to get a system, also, I havent heard of any of them previously...

I scanned their site (amiga.com) and found a newer "press-relese" that showed the actual specification of the $500 unit... looks like a standard ATX specced pc to me...

http://www.amiga.com/news/index.php?art=27

Its based on a PowerPC CPU that will run at a maximum 667MHz which will make about 1260Mips at that speed, i.e. at double clockrate, cant really see that competing, but I havent tested any such thing or seen any tests of it lately so I will not judge.

I'm dumbfounded - I thought they disappeared shortly after the Toaster came out... I resisted going beyond my 2000's, because it seemed like the company was just trying to make a few bucks before closing up shop... lots of hype, no promised follow through... (Like Imagine). I had friends go the full "nine yards" with them, against my instincts... and they ended up investing over $10 grand in a home "Amiga Studio." - which was unsupported and almost obsolete shortly thereafter... (Mac attack)

From that website:

"About Amiga
Amiga, Inc. is the world’s premier provider of multimedia enabling technologies. For almost two decades its award-winning software has been a mainstay for motion picture studios, multimedia creators, and digital entertainment enthusiasts around the world. Today Amiga builds on this legacy leading the way in multimedia development by providing developers with hardware-independent technologies for writing and porting applications to new platforms and interactive devices. For more information visit www.amiga.com."

I'm really not buying this ,either... literallly

How decadent can we get?...

Yes,... I'll wait until I see more BUT! I'm not going to have the Impulse/Commodor [belly up] effect as it seems many now feel [and not with a good reason].

Working with other 3d apps I end up going back to Imagine3D for many things; can't even say, "Except for character animations." now.

A tool is a tool; I have a Mac and 3 PCs [that I use]... ho yeah... one dead [non working] Amiga 4000. But do I need another 'item' to work with?

Thanks for the Amiga info, dmancheno; I'll work with what I have and keep an eye on it's development.

If it dies... well... been there done that already.

A tool is a tool... what's in your walet?

If you go to Amiga.org, the public release of the MiniMig design is now out. Looks like there will be a serious attempt at building them. Real hardware for a change, instead of Scamigas inc. vaporware.
