i'm looking for a freeware tall grass texture that can be mapped onto an object made transparent so i can put tall grass in my scene without creating a lot of objects. this would be fore imagine 3.0 on the amiga.
any help appreciated.

Not bad. If you can stump the Guru's here, you've done good.

I've never heard of a texture that does that. But I know of two ways it can be done. The least memory and processor intensive way is to map your grass onto a simple plane (with a transparent background) and then spend an afternoon doing the old 'cut and paste, paste, paste...')

An alternative is to make a ground out of a heavy polygon plane. Duplicate it, and using Pick Range, delete any polys that you think make for an oversaturation of grass. Then create a simple triangle object for a blade of grass, and assign that object to the grass-to-be object you just made as a Particle.

The latter technique works well as it is easy to animate parts of it if need be, the downside is it requires some experimentation to get it right. And hogs RAM too.

You could also use the popcorn utility I'm alwats on about and apply the plane grass object to it...confused..ask further if you're interested...I've done some cool forests this way and I imagine long grass would be similar.. ...

There's a fair number of grass textures (bitmaps) around but they're mostly for mapping on the ground.

I've come up with some good grass. I use the branches texture and set the objects attribute "filter" all the way up. You can place multiple instances to vary the sizes. You can apply it to a bunch of planes at the same time. I usually just make the objects, but that kills in render time. It's good for volume. Good luck.
