 Re: NCC-1701-A
I think our ship is looking fine... the Enterprise don't need so much texturing of the procedural sort, probably much easier to get it right with mappings, to bad Imagine doesn't do UV-mapping

Both Lahl and Clae has some tutorials up on how to do multipass to make it look really nice :)

It basically mimics the way they did it in movies like StarWars before they had all that fancy digital stuff :) With masks, beauty shots, lightshots etc. etc.

Very effective when used right...

Here is Lahl's tutorials.

Here is Clae's PDF on multipass that he uploaded here.

Thanks for showing me these things, multi passing looks complicated and may take me a while to get my head around. Does Lahl's tutorial have a pdf as well? Can you imagine how much work would be involved if I did a pass for all of the 40 lights in this model... lol. Why do I always pick such a difficult subject to try and learn :(

I haven't seen a pdf on Lahls tutorial, she did mention doing a specific one on the Enterprise, maybe she is, depends on time I suppose.

When it comes to your shots, you dont need to make a separate render for every light, just for the ones you need to control separatly.

I don't do PDF's, just the HTML. If anyone knows of a utility to convert HTML and edit PDF's etc in a professional manner that's freeware, let me know, I might compile them all together

I was going to do a multipass tutorial with the Enterprise, since it's such a classic and well known ship design and the way it used to be shot and composited optically are almost exactly how this works, but my choice of Enterprise Model (3dsmax) is so huge and complicated that it would take a long time to convert to Imagine. So have to find a detailed enough model for Imagine that's been converted already. The ones on aminet are nowhere near the level of detail I need, I'll keep looking

As for doing multipass with 40 lights.... I do multipass with up to 4000 lights, so 40 isn't much of a problem

Re: NCC-1701-A refit version highly detailed
I have a much more detailed model of the refit created by and obtained from here; Enterprise mesh: Raul Mamoru
In: http://www.trekmeshes.ch/. The file is 10.9Mb in size and in 3DS format which I can import but when loaded up there are lots of seperate objects with duplicate faces and when I try and merge them to remove them I get a too many faces message and don't know how to over come this. I have been able to merge quite a lot of faces and reduce the model to 28 objects but can't merge anymore than that. I will try and upload a picture of the bare model for you to see and if you like I can send you the zip file to look at.I am unable to render on my low spec pc which is why I haven't used it in my previous attempts.
